Qualitative research is undergoing a profound transformation driven by artificial intelligence (AI). While more efficient automated transcription methods (some of which offer significant time savings) are already becoming part of everyday research, large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Claude, and others are opening up fascinating—but also challenging—new possibilities for the analysis of qualitative data. But just how transformative is this change, and how can it be shaped in a methodologically sound way?

In this workshop, you will learn how to use appropriate prompts to integrate multiple LLMs into an interpretive process without relinquishing your own interpretive agency. This workshop demonstrates how to facilitate a hybrid interpretation session in a methodologically sound way. This section demonstrates how to critically reflect on the various AI-generated perspectives and synthesize them into an (interim) result through transparent documentation.

This research workshop goes far beyond a simple tool demonstration: We dive right into using the tool. In an interactive workshop setting, we will work together to simulate an abbreviated research process using qualitative content analysis. Participants experiment with various AI tools, apply them to a real-world dataset, and reflect on the results through direct discussion with other researchers. The goal is to develop a personalized, methodologically informed workflow for using AI in your own research.
