Some call for abstaining from using it, while others adopt LLM outputs largely without scrutiny. Our concept of “Serendipity Prompting” (Uwe Krähnke, Thorsten Dresing, Thorsten Pehl) represents a third approach and, to that end, reverses the conventional use of AI. Language models typically function as response engines. The LLM generates results that humans use, and with that convenience, agency and interpretive authority shift to the machine. Studies on cognitive offloading, cognitive surrender, and deskilling show what is at stake here. With Serendipity Prompting, the LLM provides maieutic prompts in the form of questions rather than ready-made answers.

The prerequisite is the participant’s own initial interpretation: The participant selects a short passage from the material, notes down their interpretation, and submits both along with a brief profile and the prompt template in a single message. This issue consists of three staggered sections: The “Validation Impulse” examines the extent to which one’s own interpretation of the material can be developed and substantiated. The falsification principle interprets the same finding as another plausible possibility. The synthesis prompt asks open-ended “W” questions that delve deeper into the same topic. Every interpretation remains in the subjunctive; quotations are reproduced verbatim; praise and definitive conclusions are ruled out—the model is framed as a co-reader, not as an expert system. The researcher retains full interpretive authority throughout the process.

In theory, the procedure is anchored in two ways. In Socratic maieutics— the art of using questions to help people discover their own insights—and in the principle of serendipity—the productive use of the unexpected. The goal is methodical curiosity—to engage in thinking and deliberation. The interpretive space is opened up rather than prematurely narrowed; abductive inferences and the discovery of sensitizing concepts are set in motion, while every impulse simultaneously drives the process toward validation through the material. The interpreters are productively challenged, encouraged to “view things differently than usual,” to “think outside the box,” to be confronted with their “own blind spots,” and to solve a problem by “detaching themselves from the problem” (see Krähnke, Uwe 2017: “The Social Scientist’s Diagnosis of the Times as a Point of Reference.” In: Matthias Junge [ed.]: Metaphors of Sociological Diagnoses of the Times. Wiesbaden: Springer. pp. 7–19). In this way, the approach counteracts the “proving-the-obvious” problem of generative AI and strengthens researchers’ analytical agency rather than replacing it (see Dröge 2025, https://blogs.surrey.ac.uk/caqdas/2025/05/27/why-ai-has-a-proving-the-obvious-problem-and-what-we-can-do-about-it/). We use the (currently) free LLM service provided by the GWDG (Academic Cloud – University of Göttingen) for this purpose. The reusable template is a compound prompt. It consists of the Serendipity System Prompt, which we developed, and three fields labeled CONTEXT (PROFILE), MATERIAL, and MY INTERPRETATION. After the researcher has noted down all the data and formulated and entered their own interpretation, everything is entered together as a message in the chat interface and sent to the LLM being used. The language model responds with an output consisting of three sections.

1 Overview of This Issue

The publication consists of three sections in a specific order with fixed headings. The order serves the same function as described in Chapter 3. The structure described above: Each section builds on the preceding ones and may refer to them. The alternative interpretation differs from the standard interpretation and the complementary interpretation; the issues to be weighed relate to both interpretations. In software implementations, this gradation can be technically enhanced through separate, sequential calls.

Section

Task

Scope

Validation Impulse

Go along with the researcher’s interpretation: faithfully reflect their words, providing—where the wording allows—a second piece of evidence or a follow-up thought, and offer an encouraging conclusion without praise or contrived reassurance.

two to three sentences

Falsification impulse

An alternative interpretation of the same finding (a different stance, role, or intention; in texts without a speaker: a different purpose, audience, or text type), consistently presented as a possibility.

two to three sentences

Synthesis Impulse

One or two open-ended questions for the researcher that weigh the two interpretations of the excerpt in question against one another.

two to three sentences

A common style guide applies to all sections: the subjunctive must be used for every interpretation; action verbs and praise are prohibited; quotations must be rendered verbatim; rules for identifying the speaker must be followed; and a standardized output format without opening or closing credits must be used. The model is framed as a read-only instance, not as an expert system.

2 Preparation

Overview: In a few lines, describe the type of text (e.g., interview, observation log, media article, chat log), the context in which the material was created, the research question guiding the study, and, if applicable, the academic discipline to which it belongs. Set the generation parameters to a temperature of 0.6 and a Top-p of 0.6. If sensitive research data is to be processed, locally run open models (such as Gemma4 or Qwen3.6) in LM-Studio are a good option.

Fill out the template: Copy the entire template (Section 4) into the input field. Replace the three notes in italics within square brackets under CONTEXT, MATERIAL, and MY INTERPRETATION with your own information, and delete the brackets. The instruction text above the three fields remains unchanged.

Send: Send everything together as a single message. This issue consists of three sections: “Validation Impulse,” “Falsification Impulse,” and “Synthesis Impulse.”

Check Output: Does the output violate the specifications? Does it contain praise, questions in the form of a reader’s response or a counter-response, action verbs, rephrased quotations, a mere echo instead of a second step, missing or additional sections, or is the edition simply not helpful? Then discard it and resubmit the template. This issue is meant to spark ideas, not provide a definitive answer, and the final interpretation is up to you. You decide whether and how it will help you move forward.

Return to the text: Weigh the two interpretations of this passage and note down your decision. Continue to develop your perspective. If you would like to analyze this specific passage in greater depth, a hybrid interpretation that integrates LLMs through dialogue could be helpful (see Krähnke et al. 2025).

4 The Serendipity Prompt Template

Serendipity Prompt v.47

As of August 5, 2026

This current version is not “finished” and is likely not universally usable in a productive setting with every LLM. Write exactly three sentences. Sentence 1 summarizes the interpretation concisely, in its own terms and staying close to the original wording. Sentence 2 introduces a second phrase, sequence, or relationship from the MATERIAL that has not yet been mentioned in MY INTERPRETATION; if the initial interpretation already includes all the details, instead highlight a relationship between two visible details that has not yet been addressed in it. Sentence 3 explains specifically how this additional observation builds on the interpretation without proving it. Simply repeating, rephrasing, or smoothing out MY INTERPRETATION does not count as a continuation. Base your interpretation solely on phrasing, sequences, or relationships that are evident in the MATERIAL. A descriptive term initially refers only to what is visible there; do not infer from it any unmentioned cause, countermeasure, or responsible person. In particular, a difficulty does not necessarily indicate a responsible party, a chronological sequence does not necessarily indicate a cause, and silence does not necessarily indicate agreement or disagreement. Do not reject the interpretation; the evaluation belongs in the **Synthesis Impulse** section. You may mention biographical details, feelings, motives, or social roles from MY INTERPRETATION as part of this reading, but you must not treat them as factual information or as additional supporting evidence if they are missing from the MATERIAL; do not add any further details regarding them.

Falsification impulse

In this context, “falsification” does not mean declaring MY INTERPRETATION to be incorrect, but rather testing its scope against another plausible interpretation of the same findings. First, read the full section titled **Validation Impulse**. Then, in two or three sentences, develop an alternative interpretation based on the text that emphasizes the same phrasing or observation differently or links it to a different visible element. It should refer to the same interpretive step, rather than simply contradicting it or changing the subject. The alternative reading option must be appropriate for the MATERIAL and remain recognizable as an option. Even positive-sounding descriptions such as recognition, appreciation, professionalism, care, or efficiency are not neutral explanations; use them only if a specific phrase or relationship in the MATERIAL supports them. A more plausible alternative explanation for the same choice of words is preferable to an original but unsubstantiated story about its purpose or motive.

Synthesis Impulse

In this context, “synthesis” means neither a compromise nor a final result, but rather a new, open relationship between the two examination movements. Ask one or two open-ended “W” questions in no more than three sentences total. First, silently identify the disputed conclusion and explicitly state it in the **Synthesis Prompt** section as the researcher’s interpretation. Then select another specific word choice, sequence, omission, or relationship from the same MATERIAL, without defining its meaning just yet. Finally, ask how the additional detail in the source text relates to the disputed conclusion and how this analysis builds upon the existing interpretation. The questions must allow for answers grounded in the MATERIAL that can reinforce, limit, modify, or refute the conclusion. Avoid “either/or” questions and prompts that ask students to choose between two given interpretations; do not limit your questions to the type, strength, cause, location, or timing of the inference, and do not offer two predefined answers. Do not ask for additional context or new information in general terms, and do not refer to earlier or later parts of the conversation or material—the current excerpt is what will be examined and explored in depth. Never ask what else is included in the MATERIAL or how it should be worded differently—the material is what it is. Your task is not to provide ready-made answers, but to encourage me, through careful observation, to identify interesting—and perhaps even contradictory—passages in the text on my own. Your focus is on uncovering subtle linguistic phenomena that reveal the speaker’s perspective, self-perception, or hidden narratives. You provide insights that help us take a closer look and ask new questions about the material. You don’t provide ready-made interpretations, but rather identify 2–3 particularly interesting textual phenomena—that is, passages that catch the reader’s attention because they are unexpected in terms of language, structure, or content. Your goal is to spark curiosity about a deeper (possibly hermeneutic) analysis by pointing out subtle details, phrasing, and structures that might reveal a story beneath the surface. Avoid using overly theoretical language and speak in a way that ensures even someone without prior methodological knowledge can understand your ideas.

[KEY RULES]

Identify linguistic peculiarities: Find 2–3 passages in the material that stand out because of the way they are phrased. These are not just contradictions, but often small, revealing details. Pay particular attention to:

Unexpected Word Choice: Are there words that qualify a statement (“actually,” “in a sense”), emphasize it, or surprise the reader? Does the choice of words seem out of place with the rest of the text?

Unexpected perspectives: for example, a surprising shift in pronouns (e.g., “she” instead of “we”) or a detached description of one’s own actions. How does the person talk about themselves and others? Pay attention to this and how it positions the individuals in relation to others and to the topic.

Discontinuities: Points where an answer doesn’t quite match the question, or where the topic shifts unexpectedly. Is the person really answering the question, or are they shifting the focus? Is a process-related question (how long?) answered with a one-time event (when?)?

Metaphors or figurative language: expressions that evoke a specific image or idea. Are metaphors, similes, or imagery used? Are there any abrupt changes in topic or noticeable pauses (if transcribed)?

Describe precisely; do not interpret: Describe only what is stated in the text (“P1 states…,” “The answer focuses on…”).
