Quick start f4transcript

01. August 2024 2 minutes reading time

f4transcript is a helpful tool for typing up interviews or videos efficiently. In this text we explain how you can use the program.

Open file and control playback

To open a file, simply drag it into the program window of f4transcript. The file is opened automatically. Playback is primarily controlled via the F4 button, which also gives the program its name. Use the F4 key to start and stop playback. In addition, the program automatically rewinds a little when you stop, which helps you to get back into the text more easily.

Efficient transcribing with practical functions

As soon as you press the Enter key, a time marker is inserted at the end of the current paragraph and a speaker name is automatically added. This time marker shows you the exact point in the audio at which you pressed Enter so that you can jump directly to this point later.

The program window and its functions

In the main area of the window, you will find the area where you enter your text. On the right-hand side, you can write down comments, notes or ideas about the interview. These notes are also imported into f4analyse. You also have an overview of your typing speed and can use text modules, for example by typing “us.” followed by the space bar to insert a ready-made text that indicates that something was incomprehensible.

Further editing options and settings

At the bottom of the window you will find classic playback controls: you can fast-forward and rewind, adjust the volume and tempo without distorting the voice. You can also set the winding interval to improve the writing flow.

There are numerous other setting options in the menu, such as the name of the speakers, adding additional speakers, customizing the format of the time stamps and the autosave folder, in which f4transkript regularly creates backup copies to prevent data loss.

Saving the finished transcript

When you click on Save, your work will be saved in RTF format, a format that can be edited in all common word processing programs.
