f4 Online Manual

Intro

f4 - Software for Transcription and Analysis

f4 is software for computer-assisted qualitative data analysis (CAQDAS). It was developed to efficiently support the entire research workflow—from preparing your audio and video data to systematic analysis.

The four main functions of f4:

  1. Automatic transcription: Converting audio and video recordings into text documents.
  2. Manual transcription and proofreading:
    • Manual typing of texts while playing the corresponding audio or video file.
    • Supporting functions: Variable playback speed, rewind interval, automatic time stamps, text modules and (automatic) person names.
    • Correction of existing (language-recognized) texts.
  3. Qualitative Analysis:
    • Reading texts
    • Writing memos and comments
    • Development of codes
    • Content coding
    • Filtering of quotations
    • Creation of summaries
    • Export of content in common formats
  4. AI-assisted interpretation:
    • AI Impulse: Comments and questions on specific passages in the text, based on the Serendipity Prompting method.
    • AI Dialogue: An iterative interpretation session involving three large language models (LLMs) focused on a text passage, using the method of hybrid interpretation with multiple LLMs.
    • Export the entire AI project (ideas and dialogs, including prompts and model specifications) as a Word file.

To use automatic speech recognition and AI-powered interpretation, you need an f4 account. Log in to f4 with it. Both functions use the same account and the same quota balance. To use more than the free demo quantity, you must purchase a quota credit (in material hours).

For manual transcription and qualitative analysis, you’ll need a valid license if you want to play back more than 5 minutes of audio and use more than 10 transcripts and 10 codes.
You can use the AI features for free (fair use) with a license; f4 will only take a short break if usage is very intensive.

This manual explains the technical features of the software. You can find specific instructions on how to use these features—for example, for qualitative content analysis or grounded theory—here: EXAMPLES OF METHODS
