You should find two emails in your inbox (check your spam folder if necessary).

An email contains the license numbers for f4transkript and f4analyse. Your students can easily download f4transkript and f4analyse from our download page, install them, and enter the appropriate license number. On each computer, you can then work for 20 consecutive days, with the count tracked individually for each computer.

The second email contains a quota code for f4x automatic transcription. Automatic transcription works a little differently because it is a GDPR-compliant online service. To do this, each person must first create a free account at f4x.audiotranskription.de. One hour of data allowance will then be automatically added. Using the quota code from your email, you can extend this by another hour. This allows you to automatically convert a good two hours of audio into text. If you need more, you can purchase additional allocations. We think it might be a good teaching strategy to introduce the automatic transcription feature (f4) only after students have had their first experiences with manual transcription 🙂

With the 9th edition of our practical guide (first published in 2011), we continue to introduce newcomers to qualitative research projects. It addresses questions such as: Why conduct qualitative research in the first place? How do I conduct interviews? How do I transcribe them? And how do I analyze the data?

The biggest change from previous editions is the transcription system. Our focus was on making things much simpler: just 5 rules instead of the previous 14! In addition, it has been updated to include important information on data protection in interview-based research:

We expect to release the first beta version of the new f4 version at the 2024 Berlin Methods Conference. From then on, there will be “only” ONE f4 for everything. f4x, f4transkript, and f4analyse merge into a comprehensive software solution that seamlessly integrates automatic speech recognition, manual transcription, and correction of existing texts, and provides qualitative analysis. No more switching between programs or adjusting specific file formats. From that point on, the validity period of the instructor licenses will also be extended to 30 days.
